Both Tor and VPN are systems that are greatly known to be used by people that would like to hide who they are and what they are doing. But when you take a look at everything both of them have to offer, which one do you think would be better?
Well, it is best to see it by going over the benefits and disadvantages of each of them and in the end comparing them together, so read more to see just who would win.
1st The Tor Network
Anyone can be a part of Tor (The Onion Router) network. All of the network is actually made out of the nodes offered for free by volunteers. So that is great for anyone looking for free services, but why would you even compare it to the paid service such as VPN? The reason is a very simple thing – anyone can be a node of the Tor network.
With the fact that anyone can be a part of the network you can easily come to a conclusion that your data is being transferred over servers that you would not like to be part of your route. The node could include some websites that are trying to figure out the true location or what you are searching, which websites you visit and etc. This data would then be sold or used in any other ways these ‘evil’ nodes see fit.
Now another thing that troubles people using Tor is its speed. The Tor network works in such way that you are constantly accessing data from one node then the other, which means that there are many nodes that you will go through in order to get the data from and to your PC and this takes bandwidth. Since the Tor network is made out of free volunteers they can only share their bandwidth and would not invest into servers as that would take money away from their own budget.
Tor also has many security issues that allow people to get to your true IP if you are using unsecured applications, which means that you will need to trust any application that you use, that it is built like it should and sadly, that is not the case.
If you want to read more about this attack there is a document about it made by the Institut national de recherche en informatique et en automatique from France led by Stevens Le Blond, Pere Manils, Abdelberi Chaabane, Mohamed Ali Kaafar, Claude Castelluccia, Arnaud Legout and Walid Dabbous called “One Bad Apple Spoils the Bunch: Exploiting P2P Applications to Trace and Profile Tor Users”
In the end, the Tor is a great idea, a great work and very useful for any human rights’ person or someone that wants to speak their mind over their blog. Since your account details are not secure when you use Tor, as there are ways to get a hold of them, we would not suggest using it when logging into any types of accounts, banking, e-banking, email, etc.
2nd The VPN
You can read what is VPN and how VPN works here and we will skip to the benefits of VPN over Tor network.
VPN is a much faster connection, so you are experiencing the same speed as you usually get when you are using your own connection, while in the same time you are safe and secure behind the VPN tunnel. Because it is a paid service, the bandwidth is top of the line (at least with us - RapidVPN), but we are also always investing into better and more secured servers and firewalls to make sure that there is no threat that could jeopardize your peace and your internet habits.
What this means is that your IP can never be discovered as all of our resources are standing in front of your identity making sure that something like this does not happen. This also means that you can use any application that you want and do not need to fear if it would make your true IP a public knowledge like it could become with Tor and unsecured applications.
Even though everything sounds great, many people would say that they would still not like for one company to know who you are and that is why you will not see a registration form on our website. The VPN is the best choice and if you are looking for the provider that you will like, that does not store any data about you like your name, etc. that does not require you to enter any personal details to be able to use it and that will provide you with the top notch support, come this way and you will not be disappointed.
