What is VPN?

Have you ever wondered what VPN also known as Virtual Private Network is and how it can help you with your problems? If you have, then you have come to the right place to find that out.

There are actually two different forms of VPN today, the one that started it all – the so called Frame Relay VPN and the new VPN type that is usually implied with VPN – the IP-VPN.

The Frame Relay VPN, used over wireless relays, exists for many years now, but with its high costs in maintenance and support it has been put on a shelf for many businesses. On the other hand, the IP-VPN (or just VPN for short) has much lower costs in maintenance, but they also utilize your connection to the fullest providing a VPN connection with increased bandwidth as well as security.

How does it work?

The VPN connection works in such a way that it creates a tunnel over some protocol and then adds extra security measures to it to make sure that your connection is safe. This allows your computer to know if the data has been tempered with and in the same time it makes it easy for your computer to dismiss any data that is not sent from the allowed source.

Often when a hacker would attack, he could introduce himself as the website you trust and from where you are downloading some application for example. When he does that, he can change the application and introduce any other application that he would like you to run, allowing him complete control over your computer or for spying and then sending him reports on your activity.

If your connection is made over VPN, your computer will quickly know that someone tried to manipulate the data and will simply dismiss it and ask the true source to send the same data again. This way you can be sure that you will not be harmed by anyone that wants to ‘jump in the middle‘.

But what happens when you are connecting to your email and other places, sending your account details over the network and you believe that there are some hackers lurking to find out those details?

Well even if they were to pass some of the security measures they would still not be able to see the actual data being transmitted, but some random bits that do not tell them anything.

It also protects you by hiding your own location and showing the location of the IP package (VPN server) instead. This is very useful when watching the videos on Hulu, ABC and many other places if you come from a state that is blocked by these websites, or if you want to use your facebook, PlentyOfFish or some other social website while you are located outside of your state – traveling to Africa, Asia or some other often blocked locations.

But what does that all mean for you?

Simply said, VPN could be compared with a straw and a beer, for example. Regular connection would then be a can of beer on the table so if anyone would like to drink it, all they need to do is reach for it. The VPN connection would then be a beer helmet connecting you to the ‘data’ that you want without anyone being able to get the access to it no matter what they do and you would know exactly when they are trying to access it.

VPN is basically your own way of protecting yourself from everybody else, allowing you to be safe on one side and retrieve data from another without anyone being able to see, change or misrepresent the data that comes your way.

And how can you use it?

You will need to create a VPN connection over some of the supporting protocols, like PPTP or L2TP and connect to the VPN server. For example, if you decide to purchase an account with us and protect your privacy, you can download the application that will create the connection to our server and as soon as you click on connect, you are connected and using your VPN connection.

A VPN or Virtual Private Network is a network technology that provides increased levels of security and privacy to private and public networks like WiFi hotspots and the entire Internet.

I am using VPN to access blocked sites and surf anonymously.
